A new study compares employment of previous inmates in four Nordic countries up until five years after their release. The aim has been to see whether former inmates in certain countries are more successful in finding work, and whether this is a result of the work of the correctional services or labour market measures.

The Arctic Vocational Foundation has secured funding from Sweden, Finland and Norway for a further four years of vocational training for youths. A total of 285 youths will be trained every year.

The law on quotas is the most efficient measure to improve the boardroom gender balance. “But the law should be followed up by effective sanctions and state measures which help stimulate the action.” That is the advice from head of research Mari Teigen to other countries looking to legislate for quotas on company boards.

Positions of power are still being conquered for the first time by Nordic women; Denmark has got its first female head of the confederation of trade unions. Some obvious black spots remain – Sweden has never had a female prime minister, while Norway has never had a female foreign minister. But the one position of power no woman has yet held is commander-in-chief.
