What is needed to include vulnerable youths into the labour market?
Feb 08, 2018 Norway's government is calling for a joint initiative for youth inclusion. A laudable initiative. But government ministers should also look at the underlying structures if their measures are to achieve more than papering over the cracks. Perhaps we need to think differently about how to combine education and work.

Disruption patrol alerts authorities of work-related crime
Oct 09, 2018 Private operators outside of the public labour inspection system in both Norway and Sweden are gathering information on cowboy operators within the construction industry. The Nordic Labour Journal joined Vidar Sagmyr from the construction industry’s disruption patrol in Trondheim on an ordinary assignment. This time, he received no death threats.

Iceland: Immigrants are better protected, says MIPEX
Jan 22, 2021 Sweden is still top, but Iceland saw the greatest increase in the 2020 MIPEX migrant integration policy index. The country’s index rose by seven points from 49 to 56 between 2014 and 2019, on a scale of 100. Sweden got 86 points, down one.

Media in crisis - a challenge for democracy?

The Nordic Labour Journal has made its own analysis which explains what is happening. We have also been given access to new research from Sweden, showing policy professionals, communicators and advisors enjoy great political influence. They often see themselves as better politicians than the elected representatives, who are under pressure from a growing number of media. A report from Norway’s Work Research Institute shows how an editorial office’s work environment influences creativity and the quality of the journalism. In Finland cuts in the media has led to a renewed debate over whether the Union of Journalists should accept communicators as members. In Denmark journalists and spin doctors are swapping jobs. Are these tendencies we should be worried about?

Nordic ministers want a more open working life
Dec 12, 2011 How do you open up the labour market for more people with disabilities? It is a hot topic. Despite crisis and unemployment taking hold, labour ministers keep their strategic focus on mobilising more people to join working life. They highlight the long-term need for labour and that all have the right to be fully part of working and social life. The challenge is to get working life partners to back their initiatives.
