Fighting against prejudice

In an effort to tackle discrimination at all levels of society, the Norwegian government has appointed the first ever equality and anti-discrimination ombud. The aim is to fight against all types of prejudice, be it on the basis of gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability or age.

Women in the Nordic countries participate in the labour market to a greater degree than in any other country, and there are many good examples to be found here. But some glass ceilings remain unbroken, concluded the conference “Global Dialogue on Gender in the World of Work” which was held in Helsinki in late November.

PIAAC Nordic: many adults poor at problem solving with PC

Nordic countries get top scores in OECD’s survey of adult competencies. Now new comparative Nordic research reveals that far from everyone is on the winning team. A surprising 10 percent of the population have poor skills in literacy, numeracy and problem solving using a PC. If nothing is done, many risk being excluded from working and public life. These are the results from the first PIAAC for the Nordic countries which measures adult competencies. The Nordic Labour Journal has been given a preview and features interviews with representatives from the Nordic research network behind PIAAC, from Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Estonia.

Nordregio: Young Icelanders shy away from traditional occupations

Icelandic youths are not interested in a future career in agriculture or fisheries. The only animals they will consider looking after in the future are pets. They would rather become coaches or work in the fitness sector, according to a fresh study from Nordregio which has mapped the future perspectives of young people in the Arctic.

Nordic cooperation for 2017 has been given title: A Europe in transition needs a strong Nordic Region. So what is needed to build and promote the region? More sharing of knowledge? Greater focus on the Nordic welfare model? Greater focus on which values that the Nordics choose to follow? Is a more authoritarian labour market a choice the Nordics will make?
