Norway has its Laval judgement - but this time the union won

On 5 March Norway’s Supreme Court passed judgement in what in Norwegian has become known as ‘verftsaken’, or the shipbuilding case. The judgement has been called the most important win for the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) in recent times. Losing this case could have been as significant for the fight against social dumping as the Laval case in neighbouring Sweden.

Shadow economies - the Nordic strategies

Carrot or stick? The Nordic countries have different strategies for fighting the shadow economy. Finland and Sweden have used tax incentives to make it cheaper to buy declared labour. Norway and Denmark use controls as a main tool. In Norway six authorities coordinate the work, while Denmark's new government feels controls have gone too far. A new Statistics Sweden survey due to be published in May shows Nordic cross border commuting increased by 166 percent between 2001 and 2008. Swedes are most likely to work in neighbouring countries, and now 80 percent of Nordic citizens who commute to Denmark and Norway come from Sweden. Higher wages seem to be the biggest draw.
